One morning, while you were getting ready for work, Lucía said, “Other Mommy says the letter is still in the sewing box.”
You stopped with one earring half-fastened. “What letter?”
“The one you never read because you were mad.”
For a few seconds you just stood there, hand in the air, heart tapping against your ribs like it wanted out.
Your mother had owned a carved wooden sewing box you still kept on the top shelf of the hall closet. You had not opened it in years. You waited until Lucía left for school.

The fork slipped from your fingers and clattered against the plate.
